A SPECIAL PLACE IN CALIFORNIA
|California is full of hidden gems. One of the finest must be the barefoot luxury of Laguna Beach.
On the suggestion of a valued source, we recently spent several wonderful days there. It was a perfect holiday in every way — unseasonably warm December weather, gorgeous beaches, sleeping directly above the splashing waves, delicious and innovative organic food, relaxing laid-back atmosphere, and friendly people.
Fortunately, we chose to stay at the lovely Surf and Sand Resort directly on the beach. With the sound of the waves below us at night, it was almost like sleeping outside.
The rooms were very spacious and inviting with views from the balcony of the pristine sandy beach below and the surfers headed out to catch the best waves. You can sit out on your balcony in the warm December sun and luxuriate in the relaxing scenery and serene atmosphere.
Dining at the resort can be a choice of outside appreciating the spectacular view or inside in a warmly decorated dining room. In both locations, the gourmet organic food is excellent.
For a change of pace, the South African themed restaurant, Mozambique, known for its steak and seafood is just a 3 minute walk away. It was a good choice for Christmas Eve dinner.
Walking the beaches is very popular and you can reach the beach front public park downtown in about 20 minutes with just one detour around some formidable seaside rock formations. People watching is prime with some very fit beach volleyball players in action and many children taking advantage of the beach playground.
The town itself has an abundance of art galleries, boutique shopping and good restaurants, all within walking distance. As you would expect in southern California, you will also find some quirky displays as you explore the city streets.
With a population of about 25,000 people and 7 miles of beautiful coastline, Laguna Beach is a year round magnet for luxury tourism. Located between Los Angeles and San Diego, the drive from Los Angeles airport can take 1.5 hours or 45 minutes, depending on traffic, but it is easily accessible.
Would we go to Laguna Beach again? Absolutely, it was an example of the best in California beach towns and even a non-beach person can have a great time walking on the beach and watching all the action.
