Exotic luxury travel adventures to off-the-beaten-path places are exciting benefits of traveling around the world.  It is an opportunity to eat local food, learn about native cultures, and become educated on the history and geography of little known countries.  There are many interesting places we never learned much about in school.  Although the living conditions may be more basic in outlying regions, the settings are exotic and luxury is always awaiting on the ship at the end of the day.

What to Expect With Exotic Luxury Travel Adventures

Through enrichment talks and discussions by experts on the ship, we are informed about what we will see and do when we go ashore.  We also prepare ourselves for riding around in vans without air conditioning, when the heat and humidity are in the 90 plus degree range.  Enjoying exotic travel adventures does not mean that we will not be very happy to return to our comfortable, air conditioned ship after the experience.

Where to Find Exotic Luxury Travel Adventures

Our most recent exotic luxury travel adventures took us to Papua New Guinea and the ports of Alotau and Madang.  If you have never visited the country before, you might have limited knowledge, as I did, based on primitive tribal pictures from National Geographic and faint recollections of articles about headhunters and cannibals. Fortunately, the last known cannibalism occurred sometime in the 1970s.  However, we were told that violent altercations over land ownership and other property still happen frequently in some parts of the country and are usually settled with machetes and only one survivor.  Law enforcement is apparently non-existent here.  After learning that this way of settling disputes is common in the outlying islands, we were happy to just be visiting the main island. boy with snake madang in Papua New Guinea, found at one of our exotic luxury travel adventuresPapua New Guinea has only been independent since 1975.  It shares the same very large island with Indonesia and was settled by the Germans in the north and the British in the south.  In 1905, the British transferred their interests in the south to Australia to administer, and after World War I Australia also took over the northern part from the Germans. When offered complete independence, the citizens of Papua New Guinea chose to remain under the British Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth as their sovereign and a Governor General as  her resident representative.  Australia continues to provide aid and education scholarships, while still contending with boatloads of people who travel to Australia seeking asylum. The people in Papua New Guinea are very friendly, but the only common language they can use to communicate with each other is pidgin English.  It is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world with 848 different languages and many distinct tribes.

Alotau and Madang……… Two Ports with Beautiful Natural Settings

The natural beauty of these villages on the water, along with the abundance of locally grown fruits and vegetables, keep the people from being completely poverty stricken.  As in all communities, some are better off than others, but most of the people we saw appeared happy and healthy. At both ports, we were treated to a display of local tribal dances and a selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables, including sweet potatoes which are a mainstay of their diet and very tasty. kids and puppies in Papua New Guinea, found on one of our exotic luxury travel adventuresThe heat was fatiguing in Alotau, as we were packed into vans without air conditioning, even though they were the best available. Madang, by contrast, is larger, prettier and shows more personal wealth among its inhabitants.  The houses, even the simple ones, are more spacious and have better layouts.  Some  of the villages near Madang have small crafts industries, such as making pottery pots. Having the option to end our exotic luxury travel adventures back on our air conditioned ship allowed us to participate in the daily lives of the Papua New Guineans as much as possible without sacrificing end-of-the-day comfort.  It is the perfect blending of sophisticated adventure travel and luxury accommodations to create the ideal exotic luxury travel adventures.
