IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL?

Last week our government issued a compelling worldwide warning against possible escalated terrorist activity in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. The potential targets are hotels, business offices, restaurants, public areas, shopping malls, important sporting events, and tourist destinations where US travelers might gather.

When traveling outside the country, what should you do to remain safe? Many things you are faced with are just a matter of common sense. For instance:

  1. If you see a crowd of people carrying signs and marching down the street, while someone is yelling out aggressively on a bullhorn, leave the area quickly. It does not matter what they are protesting, you do not want to be part of it. Many political and labor demonstrations become suddenly violent and can easily spread to non-participating bystanders.
  2. If you are in an Arab bazaar and people are asking where you are from, assess their attitude toward Americans before replying. If they seem antagonistic or hostile, tell them Canada. Will the Canadians be offended? Perhaps, but you will immediately defuse a potentially ugly encounter. Remember, your safety is paramount.
  3. If you are traveling independently and using local buses, trains and airports, be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to the people and activities around you. Do not ignore your own instincts about individuals who look questionable. Change your location, if possible. Always be alert and on guard, especially if someone approaches you and claims to be a plainclothes policemen wanting to help you.

So, is it safe to travel? In today’s world, natural disasters as well as human targeting by terrorists will continue to be part of our daily lives. For that very reason, you should not allow these possibilities get in the way of your travel dreams because, as a smart traveler, you will avoid the obvious pitfalls.

All of the above examples have happened to me while traveling, but using common sense will lead you to a safe solution.

If you are hesitant to travel to any of the government mentioned areas for possible increased terrorist activity, there are also other good options. Cuba, as a recently accessible travel destination, is close-by and fascinating. The Caribbean islands and Mexico are easily accessible and offer wonderful luxury experiences.

For longer vacations, Chile, Peru, Argentina and Brazil are exciting and rewarding to explore either by land or sea. The Galapagos Islands and Ecuador, as well as Costa Rica, provide top notch eco-friendly excursions. There are many people and places to become acquainted with on your journeys around the world.

And we cannot forget the super-safe and wonderful destinations of Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Fiji, where you will be amazed at the beautiful seascapes and unusual animals.

Yes, I think it is safe to travel, but do not leave your common sense at home.

Will you avoid traveling to any of the areas where the government has indicated there is a greater risk of terrorism? Are you worried by the frequent government travel advisories?
