If you are a “foodie”, the name Nobu Matsuhisa is undoubtedly familiar to you. As a celebrity chef and restauranteur known for combining traditional Japanese dishes with South American ingredients, he has opened 34 successful restaurants around the world, fifteen of which are in the U.S.

gourmet-main-courseAlthough it might not be possible to reserve a table at one of the sought after Nobu restaurants or travel to one of the Nobu city locations, you can still guarantee yourself a delicious Nobu dinner on the two Crystal Cruise Line ships, “Symphony” and “Serenity.”

His Silk Road specialty restaurants on each ship serve the finest Asian cuisine featuring unique flavor fusions created by Nobu. Reservations are required on a first-come, first-served basis, but there is no additional charge for these delicious dinners.

As a special treat for guests who would like to meet Nobu in person, he will be sailing on the Symphony’s July 13th voyage from Rome to Istanbul. There are still a few staterooms available on this sailing.

To understand how Nobu’s inspiration for his unique fusion cuisine developed, it is important to know that he worked in a traditional Japanese restaurant in Tokyo for seven years before being invited to go to Lima, Peru and open a Japanese restaurant there. Because he was unable to get many of the ingredients normally used in Japanese cooking, he adapted his recipes using what was available in Peru.

Nobu’s restaurant, Matsuhisa, was frequented by Hollywood celebrities, including Robert De Niro, who became his partner in 1993 and together they expanded their restaurant business worldwide.

As a friend of De Niro, Nobu has also appeared in small roles in several movies thus expanding his career in Hollywood.

Three of Nobu’s restaurants have been awarded the coveted Michelin Star designation: Nobu Las Vegas, Nobu London, and Nobu Berkeley Street London.
